TOMMY request that I tell him precisely how much interest/dividend gains his recent annuity investment had made over the previous month of May. I explained that I had informed him of such the month previous and also, for many months previous in regard to his other cash positions at his brokerage. I also attempted to tactfully, gently explain that once he’s discovered what any given previous months gains were, that he could simply rest easy in the knowledge that the following months would be near identical. He still balked, seeming to want the same as usual which is an immediate, visceral, experience of “watching the money grow.” Realizing the annuity is for a fixed period of years, having a starting date and a closing date and that it returns a X.XX% interest rate throughout the term in a compounded interest manner, I then used a robot/AI tool to quickly generate a table showing a simple, exact monthly breakdown of what each month returns in the way of gains and for the full term of his annuity.
NOTE: here is further of the constant work that I do for my father that is nowhere near the realm of the simple contract we created whereby I would be paid xxx.xx amount of money per week as a contract worker and solely for the daily administration of all technical/financial matters related to his company Harris Tire.
I’ve done this sort of investment work constantly and for the past three years. This includes the recent location and retaining of an estate attorney to handle his desire to create a revocable living trust to ensure his Henderson property remains within the family after his passing (trust stuff going well).
I see to the research of all these matters, learning everything I might need to learn in order to both understand these processes as well as eventually explain it to him (and my siblings when that time arrives) but I have never been paid for such work. Furthermore, on the back of our recent attorney meetings to begin and finalize his Trust, realizing that I was spending at least five to six hours per day doing nothing but research and document review, I actually asked him if we could begin defining separate contracts to cover that large amount of work and that I might actually be paid for it. He was immediately angered by the suggestion saying, in essence, that unlike Juanio who does his contract tire work, what I was doing, in his opinion, “is not work.” This leaves me in an impossibly odd position of being expected to do vast amounts of technical work for him but never, in any way, being compensated for it.
So, as with previous entries here, I’m taking a moment to show some of the ongoing difficulties I have simply attempting to create some sort of viable and sustainable income stream for myself in the same way any other contract worker/consultant would do. I simply cannot breach the subject without him immediately flying into a rage as though what I’m proposing is incredibly absurd and out of line. But the fact remains, I am a 100% contract/self employed person and my inclination throughout all of such new work is to feel that some compensation would be appropriate.
Furthermore, at a recent “caregiver support group” meeting for those like myself living with elderly parent(s) with progressively worsening cognitive function, I found that those persons similar to myself and doing the same sort of work as myself for their own parents, all are under an agreement with their parents that they should and do get paid for such work. Said person’s at the mentioned support group even emphatically suggested that I should discuss the matter with my father but, as suspected, that did no go over very well.
I did not pursue the payment matter any further than my initial suggestion and I happily see to the work regardless.
Here is an example of the simple table I created showing him exactly what his annuity will create in the way of interest gains per month and for the (assume it’s 36 months) 36 months term.
With the simple table shown below, he will have no problem knowing what any given month in the future has paid out in the way of gains.
